I had previously featured the Vero brand on my lifestyle blog (showcasing the Smokey Bear Campfire Edition), so I was excited to showcase one of their sports models. The brand launched in 2015 (in Portland, Oregon) and has gained a huge following in the world of horology. One of their main priorities is to deliver watches that are eye-catching, daring, and capable of withstanding gruelling conditions.
For this review, I will focus my attention on the Vero – Open Water collection, specifically the ‘Swell’ model, with its bright colourway. Do you want to find out more? Then carry on reading!
Style & Design
The vibrancy of the face colour is what hits you first; that satisfying yellow/green hue will instantly draw the eye. Paired with the brushed stainless steel body, it creates something truly memorable. Looking beyond the initial blitz on the senses, you will find an array of other style benefits.
The face features black-and-white hands (for the hours, minutes, and seconds), and this design continues onto the indices (representing the hours around the face). The bezel (using the same green/yellow hue) features 12-hour increments in complementary black.
On the front, you will spy a relatively small brand logo (just below the 12 o’clock position) and fine print reading ’20 ATM’ above the 6 o’clock position (which equates to 200+ metres of water resistance).
For the main body and bracelet links, Vero has opted for stainless steel, which ensures strength and protection against damage, even for those who like to push the limits. On the right-hand side, you will find the crown (in complementary black with the embossed logo) – this bold addition is the final cherry on top of this stylish timepiece design.
Additionally, the Open Water watch features luminiova hands and indices so you can always read the time, even when the darkness falls – critical if you are out in the wilderness when your beloved smartphone battery has given up.

Wearability & Comfort
The Vero Open Water 38 swell is not your average-looking watch; the bold yellow/green face is not something that would work for every occasion. First and foremost, it is a timepiece that has been designed for the active consumer – it looks its absolute best when paired with sporty-looking clothing (outdoor adventure gear or even gym wear). That said, it can still look good with casual attire if paired correctly. Just remember to take advantage of the vibrant facia colour to complement your outfit choices.
This Vero watch is unbelievably comfortable; its lightweight construction wraps around your wrist with ease, and the soft metal bracelet sits against your skin with no risk of irritation or of weighing down your arm, even after all-day wear.
Value For Money
If you are actively searching for a high-quality automatic timepiece, you typically need to set aside a substantial sum of money. Fortunately, Vero has somehow managed to build the Open Water models at a more than reasonable price point (especially compared to their Swiss counterparts). That’s not to say they are budget watches (sitting at around £600), but when you consider the high-end quality on offer, expert construction, and 10-year warranty, it is an outlay that makes financial sense.
Packaging
As you might expect from a top-tier wristwatch, the packaging looks fantastic. The first aspect you will notice is that it is a box within a box (akin to the classic Russian dolls) – lifting the lid on box one (solid black with simple white text and logo), reveals box two, surrounded by a marble effect sleeve (displaying the ‘Open Water 38’ name). Finally (after removing the slip cover and raising the second lid), you can find your brand-new timepiece safely secured, clasped around a soft fabric cushion, which provides added protection during transit and storage.
Overall
Are you on the hunt for a striking timepiece that is suitable for intense adventures or workout sessions that will hold its own under pressure? Then the Vero Open Water 38 Swell could very well be the answer!
This smart-looking watch has everything you could want – bold design, top-level build quality, automatic mechanism and a reasonable price of entry. This ‘swell’ looking watch (pun intended) happily receives my stamp of approval, and you will be proud to display this horological dream on your wrist all day long.
